Pluralizing Last Names Etiquette

With the holiday season quickly approaching, let's review the rules for pluralizing last names. This is especially useful for holiday cards and return address stamps.

You Never Need an Apostrophe

Apostrophes imply possession which isn't what we are trying to do. Most of the time you simply add an "s" to the last name.

Exception to the Rule Number One

If your name ends in one of the following, you'll need to add an "es" to the end of your name.

  • s
  • z
  • ch
  • sh

Exception to the Rule Number Two

If your name ends in a "x" you will add an "es". Unless the "x" is silent. In which you will add an "s".
